Adults Farmland Elementary School is proud to participate in The Metropolitan Opera Guild's program CREATING ORIGINAL OPERA. The result will be an original opera written, produced, designed, publicized and sung by the 4th grade students in Mrs. Fisher's class. Two key words in the approach to the program are process and original. By taking students through the process of creating something themselves, their mental and physical capabilities are fully challenged. And by forming their own opera company, and taking on the adult roles of their professional counterparts, learning becomes more meaningful and purposeful. So while the focus of the project is to produce an original opera, the process involves all traditional areas of learning -- from the carpenters who use math when designing scale models of the sets, to the electricians who use their knowledge of science to build footlights, to the writers who must master the intricacies of story development for the libretto. But perhaps the real bonus is that the production serves as a stage where a myriad of real-world skills, not usually addressed in the lower grades, will be learned. Project management, leadership and teamwork skills will play a major role in the overall success of this production.
